Unpalatable Press is the lovechild of literary journals and punk zines. We’re dedicated to publishing underrepresented voices and excellent literary works that do not appeal to mainstream tastes. Our focus is on the distribution and cultivation of physical media in an increasingly online world.
We publish works:
- Written by historically underrepresented voices
- That are hybrid, genreless or experimental; helping us to expand our ideas of what writing ‘Literature’ should and could be
- That invite questioning, incite discussion and engage with the world
Here at Unpalatable Press, we are focused on form as much as content. We want excellent writing, but we believe pushing the boundaries of form and language is the only way in which we can adequately express ourselves. What does language look like outside of phallogocentric discourse? Outside of colonial discourse? How can the physical form of writing be manipulated in order to better express your ideas and identity? Why print?
Physical media is important, and so are the human beings behind the media. Each issue of Unpalatable Press is made by hand, lovingly crafted in tandem with author/editor. We hope to create something you can reread, reuse, repurpose. We’re not dispassionate about digital writing, nor AI; it’s just that our focus currently is building community through real human experience and corporeal material.
Unpalatable Press is published triennially, each with a different theme. Submissions are currently closed for Issue One: GUM.
